The Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Mimko, has called for an improvement in the data collection system in the country’s health sector, saying there is need for verification of data emerging from different sources in the sector.
He said the measure would help to differentiate genuine data from those with political undertone.
According to a statement on Friday by the state commissioner for information, Mr. Kayode Akinmade, the governor spoke at the convocation ceremony of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, Ijanikin, Lagos where he was conferred with an honorary fellowship award on Thursday.
The governor, however, promised that his government would continue to invest in the health sector until it would become a reference point in medical tourism in the country and beyond.
The statement quoted him as saying, “It was clear there had to be a total overhaul and reform of the health system and we chose to put maternal and child care at the front burner of medical attention.
“We were resolute in our conviction that finances should not be a barrier to qualitative health care and that for us to succeed, all pregnant women must be tracked from conception to delivery.
“As a matter of fact, we have won consecutively, the two (and only) editions of Bill and Melinda Gates National Leadership Award for Polio eradication for 2013 and 2014.”
While thanking the institution, the governor argued that the safe motherhood programme, tagged Abiye, had been one of the most successful and talked about health care initiatives in the developing world, saying the state would continue to give the health sector the needed attention.
