In Nigeria today there is a massive migration from
rural to urban areas.
Cities are turning to smart communications that will
empower them to respond to demographic and economic shifts in a sustainable
way. solutions that provide the essential building blocks of a smart city from
shared cloud and IP networking to city-wide broadband access, and
machine-to-machine (M2M) capabilities are what people should be looking out for.
Statistics
shows that in 2010 more than half
of the world population lived in urban areas
By 2050, seven out of 10 people will be city
dwellers
By 2025 there will be 37 mega-cities with a
population of greater than 10 million people
Between 2011 and 2050 the urban areas of the
world are expected to absorb all the population growth expected over the four
decades and the migration from rural areas to cities, according to 2012 data
from the United Nations.
The
fact that more people are coming to what are often already crowded cities means
that these metropolises will have to get to work to ensure the resources are in
place to efficiently provide energy to, feed, house, transport, and treat their
residents and visitors. Smart city solutions can allow for that.
Taking
a holistic approach to Smart Cities and the using of capabilities emerging from the Internet
of Things (IoT),which provides
support for devices and sensors, city-wide access networks for sensors, city
shared networks for aggregation and the back haul of data, and the management
and support
For smart resources,
it is hoped that a city will move faster and smarter to deliver better public
services while using public resources more efficiently if it is more prepared and smarter.
